Match or exceed your panel. A 1920×1080 monitor looks fine with a 1080p file, but a 2560×1440 or 3840×2160 screen will visibly smear anything smaller. Downscaling is free; upscaling is not. That is why everything under 2400 px wide is hidden by default.

Setting it up
Always save the full-resolution file rather than the preview. Right-click it and choose Set as desktop background, then open Settings → Personalisation → Background and set Choose a fit to Fill. On two monitors, right-click the image and use Set for monitor 1 / 2 to place a different file on each screen.

Where these come from
Every image is served from Wikimedia Commons or Openverse, and each one carries its photographer and licence in the preview panel. Most are Creative Commons, which means you can reuse them — including commercially — as long as that credit travels with the file.
